Cunning Hares faction.

"The best mackerel is always the one you haven't eaten yet~" — Nekomiya Mana. Spirited and mischievous, she likes to play tricks on others. Your wallet is her wallet. (Really... It's hers now.) Athletic and daring, no Hollow is too dangerous for her. "Cats love fish" is actually an incorrect stereotype. But Nekomata does love fish... She's seen a lot of cat-astrophy and "curiosity killed the cat" moments, and seen many a secret that can't be told.

Ratings

This tier list assesses Agents (characters) based on their combat potential in Zenless Zone Zero’s most demanding contents - Deadly Assault (DA) and Shiyu Defense (SD). Please keep in mind Zenless Zone Zero is a skill-based game and each character has a different playstyle, difficulty level and even special tricks and combos. Zenless Zone Zero is also a team based game and it's only by combining both these factors to the highest level a character can reach optimal performance.

Endgame Modes

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Low-cost EX Special, great to funnel Steel Charge for Seed teams;

  • Easily affordable from a Skill level and W-Engine perspective.

Cons

  • Quite literally the lowest damage potential of any DPS in the entire game, honestly best built on Supportive sets in Seed teams;

  • Kit entirely revolves around dealing damage, too, so utility is almost nonexistent aside from Seed being her saving grace;

  • Literally outclassed in any team that exists. For all intents and purposes (unless you really like Nekomata), from a meta perspective, she is a bad decision.

Review

Nekomata is an S-rank Physical Attack Agent who specializes in executing low-damage but very swift attacks as her primary means of dealing damage to enemies. As a damage dealer, she provides no supportive capabilities in her own kit, but with the recent addition of agents like Seed she has become better than ever, even if she mainly takes on the role of a support in Seed Teams. Let’s delve into the specifics of her kit:

Key Mechanics

Nekomata is one of the simplest characters in the game with very few intricacies. However, one of them is contained within her Core Passive effect, which allows her to gain a significant, but short-term damage boost after executing a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist. To be exact, the buff goes as high as 60% general DMG Bonus for 6s.

As a result, due to the short duration of this buff, Nekomata likes playing in teams that offer speedy access to Quick Assists during stun (this means Astra/Nicole)  and she also enjoys staying actively on-field, dodging enemy attacks. It is key to maximize Nekomata’s damage output to ensure uptime on this buff on all of her highest damage abilities (being her Ultimate, EX Special and even her Chain Attack if possible). Nonetheless, the uptime on this buff is very short so it can be difficult to play around over the course of lengthier combos — but with agents who can provide near-instant access to Quick Assists like Astra Yao and Nicole, it isn’t impossible.

Via her Additional Ability, Nekomata could gain an extra 35% DMG boost to the next EX Special that follows an Assault Anomaly trigger, stackable up to 2 times. Unfortunately however, none of her teams apply enough anomaly for this to ever work out, which makes her additional ability pretty useless. Hence, in her best teams, this Additional Ability effect can and should be safely skipped out on without much issue.

EX Special

Nekomata’s EX Special is a low 40 Energy cost. This is one of the lowest cost EX Specials in the game and it deals only an okay amount of damage as a drawback to its low cost. In addition, the animation is rather slow compared to the rest of her kit, but Nekomata can be switched out of this animation on cast in order to mitigate this effect.

Basic Attack

Nekomata’s Basic Attack has 2 different mechanics: Her 5-part Basic Attack has a special mechanic on the 5th hit that allows it to repeat up to 3 times with a 1 in 3 chance. This same mechanic also exists on her Crimson Blade attack triggered by holding Basic Attack during any of the first 3 hits. It essentially acts as a weaker version of her Basic Attack 5 which means it’s not worth executing over her regular Basic Attack string.

Additionally, these potential extra hits may not always be desirable depending on your W-Engine choice. Nekomata’s Steel Cushion W-Engine, one of her top choices, provides extra damage when dealing damage to enemies from behind. These extra hits will have you bounce back and forth between the enemy’s front and back which can prove problematic if trying to capitalize on this W-Engine’s effect.

Unused/Redundant parts of her kit

All of Nekomata’s Dodge and Assist-related moves work as you’d expect them to so we won’t go in detail over them. However, don’t forget about maximizing on her Core Passive’s DMG buff via her Dodge Counter and Quick Assist.

Meta Position & Conclusion

In the current meta, Nekomata is in a rather difficult spot. Her damage has always been on the low end since her release, and stronger and stronger characters releasing over time did not help her stand out much. That is, until Seed came around.

With Seed’s release, Nekomata’s low-cost EX Special came to light once again, since Seed’s Steel Charge mechanic which allows her to unleash a lot of her damage can be replenished by expending Energy as the active Agent. Nekomata does this pretty well, and since her damage has become significantly overshadowed by every DPS Agent since Nekomata’s initial release, she tends to run supportive Disk Drives and W-Engine builds, but her potential to funnel Steel Charge to Seed is rather appreciated and a good F2P alternative to her teams. This is Nekomata’s only current meta position, but she is still overshadowed in this team by other, better premium options or Corin.

We can conclude Nekomata is rather replaceable in the meta, yet does hold some niche use cases for Proxies who want to make use of her.

Best W-Engines

The W-Engines are listed in order of priority. Sometimes the percentages appearing near them won't reflect their performance as pure damage or Stun output isn't the only thing we're looking at - the utility of the W-Engine might be more important than the calculations imply.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 684
Crit Rate (Lv 60): 24%
Nekomata's Signature W-Engine - a strong option for Physical Attack Agents and also a usable option for others but with the requirement for both being that the player must actively aim to attack from behind targets wherever possible in order to get good performance compared to alternatives.

Deadly Assault: 20535

96.22%

CRIT DMG increases by 50/57.5/65/72.5/80%. When the equipper enters the battlefield, or activates a Chain Attack or Ultimate, they gain 1 stack of Heartstring. Each stack of Heartstring allows the equipper's Chain Attack and Ultimate to ignore 12.5/14.5/16.5/18.5/20% of the target's Fire RES, stacking up to 2 times and lasting 30s. Repeated triggers reset the duration.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 713

A great stat stick for most characters. Grants a tremendous amount of unconditional CRIT RATE and CRIT DMG.

92.90%

CRIT Rate increases by 10/11.5/13/14.5/16%. Dash Attack Electric DMG increases by 40/46/52/58/64%. When any squad member applies an Attribute Anomaly or Stuns an enemy, the equipper's CRIT Rate increases by an additional 10/11.5/13/14.5/16% for 15s.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 713
Crit Damage (Lv 60): 48%
A solid all around generic option thanks to its close to permanent uptime of 20% CRIT RATE and always active 45% CRIT DMG, alongside its high base ATK.

91.83%

Upon hitting an enemy with a Basic Attack, Dash Attack, or Dodge Counter, the equipper's ATK increases by 3.5/4.4/5.2/6/7% for 8s, stacking up to 8 times. This effect can trigger once every 0.5s. The duration of each stack is calculated separately.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 684
Attack (Lv 60): 30%
Soldier 11's Signature W-Engine and a good choice for any character with a focus on using a lot of Basic Attacks or even just a few long lasting ones. The catch is each buff stack has its own duration and only 1 buff can be gained every 0.5 seconds, making maintaining max stacks of this buff require constant Basic Attacks.

When an EX Special Attack or Chain Attack hits an enemy, the equipper's ATK increases by 6/6.9/7.8/8.7/9.6% for 8s. While the target is under an Attribute Anomaly, this effect is increased by an additional 6/6.9/7.8/8.7/9.6%.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 594

Base ATK (Lv 60): 594
Attack (Lv 60): 25%
A solid all-around Free To Play accessible option for all Attack Agents. Grants 25% unconditional Standard Attack and a further 19.2% (At S5) Combat Attack buff after performing a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist lasting 12 seconds. This buff is reasonably easy for all Attack Agents to achieve in both their standard and burst rotations, assuming a Support character is present on the team.
Usage: 4.16%
Shiyu Defense: 122s
Deadly Assault: 16008

87.24%

Increases ATK by 7.5/8.6/9.7/10.8/12%. Attacks that land a CRIT on an enemy will inflict an additional 200% of ATK as DMG. This effect can only be triggered once every 8/7.5/7/6.5/6s.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 594
Crit Rate (Lv 60): 20%
The battle pass W-engine - an expensive engine to acquire which while incredibly consistent is often weaker than other W-Engines. The main issue with the on Crit trigger ability is that the damage is Physical and cannot CRIT meaning for non-physical characters you'll be losing all elemental DMG% boosts on this damage and for all characters not CRITing is a big downside making the damage from this unimpactful.

Whenever a squad member inflicts Assault on an enemy, the equipper deals 35% increased damage to the target for 12s.

Competitive option for direct and Anomaly-based Physical damage dealers granting 10% permanent Physical DMG% from the 2-PC and 35% increased DMG against enemies inflicted by Assault by any party member for 12 seconds. DMG% bonus against enemies will be up the majority of most fights against boss-type enemies thanks to its long duration and ability to trigger from any team member allowing a Physical based Bangboo/teammate to assist with uptime via their own Assaults.

(4)
Triggering a critical hit with a Basic Attack, Dodge Counter or EX Special Attack increases the equippers ATK by 9% for 6s. The buff duration for different skills are calculated separately.

Great option for all direct damage dealers that make use of some form of Basic ATK and EX frequently. The set grants 8% permanent CRIT RATE% from the 2-PC and a 9% increased combat ATK% buff for 6 seconds when triggering a CRIT with each a Basic Attack, Dodge Counter or EX Special Attack from the 4P. Each buff belongs to an attack type so you'll need to CRIT with each type every 6 seconds to maintain 3 stacks. You can expect 2 stacks of this set most of the time one from basics and one from either EX's during a burst window or Dodge Counters during downtime granting 18% combat ATK% that multiplies all ATK stats like FLAT ATK and ATK% ((Base ATK * (1 + ATK%)) + Flat ATK) * (1 + Combat ATK%).

Despite all this, the set has ramp-up time and can quickly fall off without access to energy for EX's making it most suitable for characters with cheap EX's, frequent Dodge Counters or concentrated burst damage windows.

Ultimate DMG increases by 20%. Launching an Ultimate increases the equippers ATK by 15% for 12s.

A top option for burst damage characters aiming to deal most of their damage in a short window following their Ultimate. The set grants 8% permanent PEN Ratio% from the 2-PC, 15% increased combat ATK% for 12 seconds after using an Ultimate and 20% increased Ultimate DMG from the 4P. When evaluating this set we assume you'll gain and save your damaging Ultimate for the enemy Stun window and use it before executing the rest of your combo. If you're unable to gain your Ultimate every stun window, this sets value will drop compared to its listing.

Calculations

Damage output

Important!

  • Nekomata's Mindscape 2 doesn't have a direct impact on her damage output making its value difficult to portray in the calculations below - that doesn't mean they aren't useful though the bonus energy can result in 1, 2 or even 3 extra EX's over the course of a fight.
  • Nekomata's Mindscape 1 is reliant on her attacking enemies while behind and grants her the ability to always be treated as behind while attacking Stunned enemies. As the enemy is stunned for the majority of the burst rotation this bonus is almost always active. Additionally as Nekomata is using her signature W-Engine in these calculations she also gains higher benefit from the engine thanks to the permanent behind status. For all these reasons while the enemy is not Stunned and actively attempts to face you during the standard rotation this Mindscape loses a lot of it's potential unless in the hands of an incredibly skilled player.
  • After unlocking Nekomata's Mindscape 4 it's recommended you perform 2 EX Special's before her Ultimate in the burst rotation. Also, during Nekomata's standard rotation you may or may not have duration of this buff - if you have it active you can expect the damage increase listed on the chart, if you don't you will lose a portion or all the damage gains for this Mindscape during the standard rotation.
  • In these calculations we assume Nekomata's Mindscape 6 is active for the full rotation listed as it has no set duration after it is active and can be swiftly gained in combat through a number of different ways. If you're slow to ramp up this buff you can expect lower performance than listed.
Nekomata in 1 Target scenario - Burst

Rotation time: 13.1s for Burst

Details about the calculations

Here are the rotations used in the calculations.

During Nekomata's Burst rotation her Core Ability does not remain active for its full duration as she only gains it once at the start via a Quick Assist. Reapplying the Core Passive is challenging - solo boss enemies while stunned will not attack you so you cannot Dodge Counter and triggering another Quick Assist takes up valuable Stun duration. For this reason it's imperative you fit in all your most potent attacks immediately after performing a quick assist as listed below.

Burst rotation (During Stun)
  • Chain Attack: Claw Swipe
  • Quick Assist: Cat's Paw
  • EX Special Attack: Super Suprise Attack!
  • Ultimate: Claw Smash
  • EX Special Attack: Super Suprise Attack!
  • EX Special Attack: Super Suprise Attack!
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P1
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P2
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P3
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P4
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P5 (Optionally repeat if activates)
Standard rotation (Downtime)
  • Dodge Counter: Phantom Claws (Use at least every 6 seconds)
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P1
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P2
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P3
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P4
  • Basic Attack: Kitty Slash P5 (Optionally repeat if activates)

And here are the W-Engines and Disk Drives used in the calculations.
