Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Strong universally appreciated debuff with permanent uptime,

  • SP flexible,

  • Decent personal damage output for a support,

  • Deals damage in the form of DoT raising her consistency,

  • Can force proc all Burn DoT effects on enemies,

  • Fully SP positive in single-target.

Cons

  • Extremely investment heavy especially for a Support,

  • Damage taken is a weaker debuff than DEF Shred,

  • Specific stat requirements can leave little room for defensive stats.

Review (By Sushou)

Guinaifen is a decent 4-star Support character. She afflicts enemies with a debuff that increases their total damage taken and can stack up to 3 times. She also deals a very impressive amount of damage over time (for a Support that is) and can apply it very easily to many enemies at once. She can even be SP positive in 1 or 2 target scenarios, resulting in a near-universally applicable support character that also contributes very significant damage of her own. The cost of this is a very steep investment requirement, especially when compared to other support options.

Guinaifen, Guinevere, or just Gwen. However you choose to call her, her charm is infectious and fiery, and her gameplay is equally explosive. As a DoT-based character, you may be led to believe that Gwen is predominantly made for Kafka teams and that she may not see much use elsewhere, but you would be quite mistaken.

Guinaifen’s Talent is the source of her powerful debuff. While she is still alive and on the field, there is a 100% base chance to apply the Firekiss debuff to an enemy after they sustain damage from a Burn DoT. Firekiss will increase the damage that the target takes by up to 7%, stacking up to 3 times for a total of 21%.

Being able to inflict a 21% damage vulnerability is very strong. While damage taken is a slightly lesser debuff when compared to the likes of DEF Shred, it has the similar benefit of being very uncommon, meaning it often performs at its listed values due to not suffering from diminishing returns. Welt’s 12% damage vulnerability debuff already gets high praise, and Gwen comes in slamming with 21%. What’s more ridiculous is that Firekiss lasts for 3 turns, meaning this debuff is permanently active in practice. Even better is it’s completely unremovable, so there’s no possible way for enemies to get rid of it outside of its duration running out.

Since her Talent requires a Burn DoT, it’s only fitting that she can also apply one. Guinaifen’s Skill will deal damage in a Blast AoE, up to 120% ATK to the main target and up to 40% to adjacent foes. This Skill has a 100% base chance to Burn all targets hits for 2 turns. Oh and the Burn DoT itself deals up to 218% of Gwen’s ATK per tick. That is a very impressive damage multiplier to have in what is supposed to be a support character’s kit. Having a 100% base chance also means that it’s relatively easy to get enough Effect Hit Rate (EHR) to make this a guaranteed application on even the absolute pinnacle enemies you may encounter.

Guinaifen’s Ultimate deals damage to all enemies on the field, up to 120% ATK at max Trace level. If a target is afflicted with Burn, it will immediately deal damage equal to 92% of the Burn’s original damage. Yeah, the thing that Kafka does for all DoT effects, Gwen can do that for all Burns. This significantly improves her already quite impressive personal damage. With this Ultimate having an average Energy cost of 120, this is going to be up pretty often. This also has the added benefit of stacking Firekiss even faster, thus reducing the required ramp-up time.

Guinaifen’s Bonus Ability Traces raise her efficacy quite substantially. Her A2 will grant her Basic ATK an 80% base chance to inflict the same Burn DoT as the one from her Skill. While the base chance is slightly lower than on her Skill, this is what allows Gwen to be SP flexible, as she can range from SP neutral to even SP positive in 1 or 2 target scenarios as the majority of her damage comes from DoT. With this Bonus Ability, Gwen is able to contribute very significant damage while still restoring SP.

Her A4 will Advance Forward Gwen’s action by 25% at the beginning of the fight, which with a good amount of SPD will usually mean Gwen is one of the first people to act in a fight, if not the first. It’s like having a weaker Vonwacq permanently without actually needing to use Vonwacq (this is the greatest trade deal in the history of trade deals).

Gwen’s A6 is particularly potent as it is exactly what Himeko has, causing Gwen to deal 20% increased damage to Burned enemies. This naturally also applies to the DoT effect she applies, and also stacks fully with her own damage vulnerability provided by Firekiss. Interesting to note as well is that Gwen is the first character to get Break Effect Minor Traces, getting a total of 24% Break Effect for free.

Guinaifen absolutely does not need Eidolons to be strong, but as a 4-star character it is entirely possible to eventually get Eidolons for her. Of particular note is E1 and E6. E1 grants Skill a 100% base chance to reduce the attacked enemies’ Effect RES by 10% for 2 turns, and E6 increases the maximum stacks of Firekiss to 4, meaning that by the time you get to this Eidolon level, Firekiss is going to be providing a 30.4% damage vulnerability.

However, the cost of this power is the need for investment, and it is a particularly great need for Guinaifen. Usually support options like Pela only really need a little bit of one important stat to get going, sometimes not even needing to be at max level. Guinaifen can get by with the bare minimum just like the aforementioned characters, but she won’t be able to compete with them at just that level, as she really wants to be built to deal damage as well.

She reaches a whole new level when you actually invest into her fully, and while this is something that is ultimately a very good investment, it is also something that not everybody can immediately afford to do. In addition to this, since Guinaifen does deal damage and especially because she is likely to be using Basic ATK a lot, she also requires pretty much all of her Traces to be levelled up to the maximum, which is yet more investment compared to her fellow debuffer.

Getting the required amount of EHR without sacrificing too much ATK% is actually quite difficult, and because of the need for such stats to begin with, Guinaifen can potentially be a little less safe when compared to support options that can afford to go for defensive stats. In practice, this should not be a particularly difficult thing to work around since Tingyun is one of the best supports already and has the same investment requirements and perceived squishiness, and Gwen has higher base stats than Tingyun does. If this is the supposed reason for your Gwen dying, that is most assuredly not the fault of Guinaifen.

Think of her as a long-term investment that will only get better as you get more things for her. She’s worth the extra effort, even if it may not be immediately evident.

Ratings

Honkai: Star Rail is a game where team building matters most and while our tier list takes the optimal setup into account, a lot of characters can work and do well - even those ranked lower - when you invest into them. Also for story or lower difficulties of Simulated Universe, you don't need to worry about ratings and tiers. You can safely clear that content even with F2P characters as long as you build your team correctly.

Available ratings:

  • Memory of Chaos (MoC) - how the character performs in the Memory of Chaos. Blast and single target damage are important here while AoE has niche uses against some bosses.
  • Pure Fiction (PF) - how the character performs in the Pure Fiction. AoE is king here, followed by Blast while single target damage is mostly useless.
  • Apocalyptic Shadow (AS) - how the character performs in the Apocalyptic Shadow. Single target and Break is important here.

Increases the wearer's Effect Hit Rate by 60/70/80/90/100%. After the wearer uses Basic ATK, Skill, or Ultimate to attack an enemy target, there is a 60% base chance to inflict "Unarmored" on the target. While in the Unarmored state, the enemy target receives 10/12/14/16/18% increased DMG, lasting for 2 turn(s). If the target is under a DoT state inflicted by the wearer, there is a 60% base chance to upgrade the "Unarmored" state inflicted by the wearer to the "Cornered" state, which additionally increases the DMG the target enemy receives by 14/16/18/20/22%, lasting for 2 turn(s). During this period, the wearer cannot inflict "Unarmored" on the target.

Source: Event Warp (limited)

Incredibly strong team-wide supportive option for DoT based Nihility supports seeking a large amount of Effect Hit Rating and who can apply and maintain their DoT throughout combat.

2

When the wearer hits an enemy and if the hit enemy is not already Ensnared, then there is a 60/70/80/90/100% base chance to Ensnare the hit enemy. Ensnared enemies' DEF decreases by 12/13/14/15/16% for 1 turn(s).

Source: Stellar Warp

One of the top Nihility supportive options available. Must be played around effectively due to its 1 turn duration - aim to apply this during the enemies turn or right after it. Becomes more powerful when combined with other sources of DEF% reduction.

(2)

Increases ATK by 12%.

(4)

For every DoT the target enemy is afflicted with, the wearer will ignore 6% of target's DEF when dealing DMG to them. This effect is valid for a max of 3 DoTs.

Exceptional damage set for DoT-focused characters that play within teams that can consistently apply and maintain 3 DoT's to enemies. Becomes more powerful when combined with other sources of DEF% reduction. Best set for a damage-focused Guinaifen if supportive 2P bonuses and sub stats aren't a priority.

(2)

Increases Break Effect by 16%.

(4)

If the wearer's Break Effect is 150% or higher, ignores 10% of the enemy target's DEF when dealing Break DMG to them. When the wearer's Break Effect is 250% or higher, the Super Break DMG they deal to enemy targets additionally ignores 15% of the targets' DEF.

Top damage-focused option for characters that play within teams that leverage Super Break or deal predominantly Break/Super Break damage themselves. Becomes even stronger with additional sources of DEF% reduction. Should only be used when playing Guinaifen in Super Break teams where she is granted the ability to do so by another teammate.

Special Planetary Sets

(2)

Increases the wearer's ATK by 12%. When the wearer's SPD is equal to or higher than 135/160, the wearer deals 12%/18% more DMG.

A generic and strong option for damage characters that scale best from the combiantion of DMG% and ATK% and who can build/reach a large amount of Speed (160 preferrably). A top option for those looking to elevate their Guinaifen's damage instead of using supportive options.

(2)

Increase the wearer's SPD by 6%. When the wearer hits enemy targets with Fire Weakness, the wearer's Break Effect increases by 40%, lasting for 1 turn(s).

Powerful Break-focused set, primarily for Fire characters. Useful both for Break characters and Break scaling Supports and Sustains thanks to its massive Break Effect% buff and permanent 6% Speed boost. Should only be used when playing Guinaifen within Super Break teams where she is granted the ability to do so by another teammate.

(2)

Increases the wearer's Energy Regeneration Rate by 5%. When the wearer's SPD reaches 120 or higher, the wearer's action is Advanced Forward by 40% immediately upon entering battle.

Incredibly potent option for buff/debuff based characters. The advance from this set allows the wearer to apply their buffs/debuffs before the rest of the team acts, accelerate rotations, allows access to ultimates closer to the start of the fight and also grants Energy Regen - a valuable stat for many supports.

If you want to learn more about the various stats and breakpoints, expand the section below.

Relic Main stats
  • Body - ATK% = EHR%

    • Depending on the Light Cone you are using EHR% or ATK% can both be best in slot. You must hit 67% EHR to guarantee your Burn will land on all targets so reaching this is the first step to building Guinaifen.

  • Feet - SPD

    • Best choice for this slot.

  • Planar Sphere - FIRE DMG % or ATK%%

    • Both are viable options.

  • Link Rope - ATK%%

    • Best choice for this slot.

Additional notes for sub-stats
  • ATK% & DMG%: Most of Guinaifen's damage is from her Burn. Stacking these two stats is the primary way to boost her damage. Seek them out wherever you can in equal amounts for the highest overall damage.

  • Effect Hit Rate%: In order to land her Burn against all targets in the game Guinaifen needs 67% Effect Hit Rating total getting this will ensure she plays consistently. If you're playing against low-level enemies or want to gamble you can use less of this stat.

  • Speed: A stat that doesn't boost Guinaifen's damage by much but does increase her consistency and supportive/break capabilities. Guinaifen's Burn only lasts 2 turns and some enemies can move incredibly fast - in order to ensure she can always keep all enemies Burned building some amount of Speed is needed. The breakpoint of 134 is usually sufficient but building more will ensure enemies always remain burned and she breaks more enemy fire toughness.

  • HP% & DEF%: Defensive stats are needed on Guinaifen due to her low base stats and without them she is very likely to be 1 shot in endgame frequently. Pick up some HP% and DEF% on your relics or get used to having Guinaifen dye randomly.

  • Energy Recharge: Guinaifen's Ultimate doesn't deal a large portion of her overall damage when played solo but does substantially more when used against Fire enemies that have been burned by Break effect or when combined with other Burn-focused characters. Building Energy Recharge is only recommended for those looking to ramp up Guinaifen's Firekiss debuff every so slightly faster or trigger an enemy's Burn or Break effect more frequently outside of these scenarios it results in a damage loss in most cases.

Build comments

Stack enough sub-stats to reach 67% Effect Hit Rating and 134 Speed after which stack ATK% as much as possible. While fishing for ATK% ensure your HP and Defence are not neglected and aim for the recommended stat template to ensure Guinaifen isn't constantly getting 1-shot. Break effect can also be good but is more suited to highly specialized Guinaifen builds.

Recommended endgame stats
  • HP: 3000+

  • DEF: 800 - 900+

  • ATK: 2600 - 3000+

  • SPD: 134 / 143 (Recommended)

  • EFFECT HIT RATE: 67%

Kafka

Kafka can detonate any Burns that are on the enemy with her Skill and Ultimate, and if you’ve got E4 on Guinaifen, allows her to get her Ultimate 1 turn earlier depending on the rotation you’ve used. Guinaifen also acts as another DoT partner for Kafka.

Acheron

Guinaifen can be used in place of other Nihility characters for Acheron, however she only has a small DMG% taken debuff on Fire Kiss. This requires a few turns to stack up and can fall off if no Burn is on the enemy, compared to her counterparts such as Pela and Silver Wolf.

Calculations

Damage Output

The simulation showcases characters damage potential in the 5 cycle turn limit of Memory of Chaos against 1 target and 3 targets. The section below has all the rules listed.

General:

  • Combat is simulated at 5 cycles of in-game time or 850 Action Points,
  • Units are considered to gain 5 additional energy per rotation through combat (taking a hit, killing an enemy or through party members and their Light Cone),
  • Characters and Light Cones are calculated at maximum output starting battle with ramp time removed from stacking buffs (intended to give a constant evaluation of power not dependant on length of fight that can be used to assess maximum power). Additional information about loss of damage due to ramp time can be round attached to related Light Cones, relics and characters,
  • Character rotations are smoothed removing breakpoints relating to Speed and Energy (finishing a fight with 90% energy full or 2 AV off next ability leading to skewed results).

Enemies:

  • Enemies are considered to always have a Break Bar resulting in units all doing 90% of real damage (this doesn't apply to Break characters - they simulate the Break bar correctly),
  • Enemies Speed is set to 140,
  • Enemies are assumed to be at 100% of HP at start of battle and to die at exactly at the end of combat. Which means halfway through the fight they are at 50% HP,
  • Enemies are assumed to have 0 Resistance,
  • Enemies are always considered vulnerable to the attackers element,
  • Enemies are considered level 95 and with DEF included.

Units:

  • All units are level 80,
  • Traces are all unlocked, skills at Level 10 and Basic at Level 6,
  • All units have fully upgraded 5 star relics with 24 desired sub stats out of a possible 54,
  • All units use their Best In Slot 2 and 4 piece sets,
  • All units use Light Cones that are realistically obtainable by all player (excluding Limited LC).

Guinaifen in 3 Targets scenario

Disclaimer for this particular calculations:

Enemies Speed is set to 140 - against faster enemies, Guinaifen damage will increase.

And here are the Relics and the Light Cone used in the calculations above:
