Insight I

When attacking, gain an ATK percentage equal to 0.5x of the number of [Burn] stacks on self, and resolve own [Burn] to deal damage to self while retaining the number of stacks. Every time after J's attack successfully inflicts [Burn], J grants the same number of [Burn] stacks to self. Take 50% less damage from resolving own [Burn] stacks, and never fall below 15% HP this way.

J is a 6-star Arcanist of the Beast Afflatus. Somewhere between Carry and Support, J's kit is focused around Counters and Burn, using both to deal consistent Mass DMG and apply sizable shields to the entire team.

From his passives, J inflicts [Burn] on himself whenever he applies it to an enemy, gaining an amount of ATK based on the amount of stacks on himself and taking reduced damage from [Burn]. In addition, while affected by [Burn], J is immune to [Freeze]/[Cold] and while below 50% HP, he dispels all non [Burn] statuses from himself to gain Crit Rate at the start of the round.

But how to apply [Burn]? That's done through “Heat Treating”. This Incantation applies a 2 turn shield to all allies, it's size scaling with the amount of Burn stacks on J. Whenever enemies attack allies that carry J's shields, he counters with "Tempering". This is a Mass attack that deals Reality DMG scaling with J's Lost HP and inflicts Burn on J.

Then there's “Hardness Testing”, which is a 1-target attack that inflicts [Burn] and grants allies a +DMG Dealt buff that scales with the amount of [Burn] stacks on J.

Finally, “Over The Haight Street” is a Mass attack that inflicts [Burn] on enemies equal to the amount of [Burn] on J before it lands, with every excess [Burn] stack increasing the damage dealt of this attack.

Gameplay Though he's not exactly punished for having [Burn], not reliably being able to be used with characters like 6 and Vila is a pretty steep price, as a majority of his kit revolves around either being low HP or having a lot of [Burn] applied to himself.

Beyond that, there's only good stuff here. All of his Counters (which he can trigger individually per ally, even on Mass attacks from enemies) count as Extra Attacks, allowing him to fuel FUA based teams. In addition, his extremely consistent [Burn] application provides solid support for [Burn] and [Neg Status] based teams, and his damage scaling with Lost HP allows him to slot into HP Loss comps with Semmelweis, Kakania and shielders. Him providing his own Crit Rate and +DMG Dealt buffs makes him remarkably self-sufficient, and his chunky 2-turn shields also help provide additional survivability, though his immunity to [Freeze] is kind of unremarkable.

In other words, he is a “niche” jack of all trades, focusing on dealing with aggressive enemies that cast a lot of incantations.

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Potential for the highest FUA count per turn, granting him synergy with a wide variety of units such as 37, Flutterpage and Ms NewBabel (E1).

  • Very potent Mass [Burn] application for units like Isolde or debuff teams under Tuesday.

  • Powerful shields with a good duration once [Burn] is stacked.

  • J specifically does not have a Euphoria, however, paired with Ms NewBabel (E1), the two become a monstrous defensive + FUA support couple capable of sustaining a team without a healer and casting a ridiculous amount of Extra Actions.

Cons

  • Niche-oriented jack of all trades, revolves specifically around FUA, [Burn] or HP Loss, with only FUA being a well-represented niche in the current meta.

  • Wants P1 to start dealing good DMG.

  • Cannot function with some common Supports due to their Cleanse (6, Vila, Tooth Fairy).

Prioritizes Critical Rate and Critical DMG with some DMG Bonus and ATK. For those who want to build J as a crit DPS. His ripostes benefit from Incantation Might so Genuinity is a no-brainer. Note that this build does not have the highest attack; feel free to tweak the build to maximize his shield strength if that's what you desire.

The Unbearable Lightness is J's signature psychube and offers him valuable ATK scaling alongside some DMG bonus and Incantation Might.

On the Hand of Time grants him a lot of Critical DMG, which he can maintain with his many ripostes per turn.

Knock on the Door is a great alternative to his signature. J easily fulfills all the conditions for its passive, though he may have to fight Isolde for it.

Blasphemer of Night is pretty easy for him to activate since [Burn] is a [Neg Status].

Family Mentor is more of a supportive/sub-DPS option that increases all allies' Critical DMG by 12–24% at max stacks while also providing J with 12–24% Ultimate Might. The lack of offensive stats makes you lose out on a lot of his damage, though, so don't use this if J is your main DPS.

About the team

A damage over time team based on Tuesday, whose Array allows [Poison] to stick and whose Insight lets her trigger [Poison] application when other allies inflict debuffs. This is very easy for Isolde and J, who both have a very steady application of [Burn], which adds to the DoT fantasy while Sotheby comes in as an overly powerful defensive anchor with additional [Poison] synergy herself.

About the team

Focused around getting J to as low as he can possibly go on HP values to maximize the DMG output of his "Tempering" counterattack. This is supported by Ms Newbabel(E), who easily doubles the size of his shields (to prevent the team from dying) while both Semmelweis and Eternity help lower J's HP while providing various buffs (Semmelweis through her Array and Eternity through her Euphoria) that scale with HP Lost.
