Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Requires reasonably low field time to execute a full Concerto combo

  • Outro provides the next character with resonance energy

  • Can CC and gather enemies slightly with her Ultimate and Resonance skill

  • Can use a healing weapon to effectively turn her into a Support which synergizes with a lot of the rest of her kit

  • Gains great utility and further supportive benefits with Sequences

  • She's free!

Cons

  • Not having an amplification buff on Outro puts her in a tough spot against supports and hybrids that do

  • Relies heavily on Forte Gauge to execute her fast Concerto rotation which can sometimes be awkward to gain a 3rd charge of quickly

  • Mediocre damage potential even when built with damage in mind

  • In a weird spot between a Hybrid and Support while not being top tier at either of them

Review

Yangyang is a free 4-star Aero Sword wielder that can function as either a Hybrid or Support in endgame content. While she is capable of dealing some damage, it falls far below other Hybrids, making her much more suitable for a Support role. As a Support character, she has a few things to offer - her Outro skill generates 20 Resonance Energy over 5 seconds for the next character, she also has the ability to inflict CC and gather monsters via her Ultimate and Resonance Skill. Of course when played as a support she can further increase her support utility by utilizing Echo's and Sets with team buffing abilities.

Her Forte Gauge can accumulate up to 3 charges, which can be generated by using her Resonance Skill, Intro Skill, Heavy Attack, or 4th Basic Attack - the first two being the best generators by far, followed by Heavy, then 4th Basic bringing up the rear. Once full, she can consume them to execute an enhanced Mid-Air attack that can be used through either Heavy Attack sequence or as standard Mid-Air attack. It is by far preferred to use it the second way as it is quicker and can be Swap-Canceled throughout its duration, which is highly recommended. This attack generates massive amounts of Concerto Energy, which is essential for her playstyle regardless of role.

Her Resonance Skill conjures a small tornado in front of her for a short duration that deals slight damage and functions as small CC and enemy gathering ability (excluding Boss/Elite Monsters), while regenerating her Concerto Energy and filling her Forte Gauge.

Her Ultimate similarly conjures a cyclone in front of her for a short duration that deals moderate damage and functions as a CC and enemy gathering ability (excluding Boss/Elite Monsters) while regenerating her Concerto Energy.

Once mastered, she can finish her job on field using very little time to execute all she needs, however it does require you to be proficient at Swap-Canceling her Aerial Forte plunge. She features a rather quick Concerto Rotation, which allows other characters to spend more time on field while benefiting from her Outro Skill’s Resonance Energy generation effect. Her small CC and gathering abilities can also be useful sometimes.

She is fairly simple to play, but has moments of vulnerabilities throughout her combo that may cause inexperienced players some grief. To maximize her potential alongside keeping her safe, you will need to keep her Resonance Skill on CD whenever possible to reduce her reliance on execution of Basic & Heavy Attacks to generate Forte Gauge. Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, mastering the Swap-Cancel of Yangyang’s Aerial Forte plunge makes her much safer and effective to play in most teams.

While her preferred choice of set and Echo is none other than the popular combination of Bell-Borne Geochelone Echo & 5P Rejuvenating Glow, which allows her to grant a semi-permanent ATK% boost, temporary DMG% boost and protection from a set number of attacks. However, in order to activate the set effects, Yangyang must use the Originite: Type II weapon and execute her Ultimate Skill at least once every 30 seconds. In case another character is using the above set, she can make use of the 5P Moonlit Glow and Impermanence Heron Echo combo instead.

Overall, she sees some usage in Tower of Adversary as a Support using either of the support sets, but more often with 5P healer set and healer weapon. She is utilized primarily where her Ultimate & Resonance Skills can disrupt enemies, and much less for bosses where she cannot. Her success is further increased in teams that allow her to Quick-Swap whenever her Resonance Skill is off CD and Swap-Cancel her Aerial Plunge.

Ratings

This tier list assesses characters based on their combat potential in Wuthering Waves current most demanding content Tower of Adversity (ToA). ToA is a mode similar to Genshin Impact’s Spiral Abyss or Honkai Star Rail’s Memory of Chaos and requires multiple teams, strong Echoes and good Weapons. This mode offers a reasonable mix of Boss encounters (single target), Elite packs (2-3 targets) and AoE scenarios (5+ Targets), allowing multiple characters to find a niche but in the end, there's a bias toward single target focused characters at the top-end.

Please keep in mind Wuthering Waves is a skill-based game and each character has a different playstyle, difficulty level and even special tricks and combos. Wuthering Waves is also a team based game and it's only by combining both these factors to the highest level a character can reach optimal performance.

Best Weapons

We recently changed Yangyang role from Support to Hybrid and are currently updating her calculations to the weapons released post-launch.

100%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT Rate: 24.3%

Outstanding Sword choice, offering significantly higher base damage due to its 5★ rarity, as well as a stackable ATK% buff almost every character can effortlessly get 1 stack of (but with 2 also being easily achievable by most when played correctly). Additionally has a good amount of Energy Regen, which on most characters will allow one sub-stat of Energy Regen to be allocated elsewhere to increase damage even further. Best Sword choice across the board with only S5 4★ Swords having a chance to compete with it.

80.51%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | ATK: 30.3%

Powerful sword for Resonators spending minimal time on the field - the shorter the better. Best for Hybrid characters executing their rotation fast and infrequently, but less powerful on Main DPS characters that aim to spend extended time on field.

80.32%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | ATK: 30.3%

Exceptional all-around generic Sword gaining its bonus close to unconditionally as most Resonators almost always aim to make use of their Intro skill and very few characters spend more than 15 seconds on field during their duration.

78.00%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 387 | ATK: 36.4%

Sword option for Heavy and Basic ATK users with an easy to trigger passive - with the only downside being its 10 second time limit. For characters that use their Skill multiple times per rotation, this downside is a non-issue but for Main DPS characters who take up a lot of field time and don't use their skill often this sword can lose value.

75.50%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 387 | ATK: 36.4%

Sword with decent base stats but a passive that only activates after taking sufficient damage after which it offers a sizable increase Heavy Attack DMG. Primarily suitable only for berserker characters that sacrifice their life to deal damage like Danjin, but can be used strategically after multiple copies have been merged (only calculated with bonus active on characters that consume their life to deal damage).

70.78%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 325 | ATK: 24.3%

Easily accessible 3★ weapon that despite having lower base attack makes up for it with a high ATK% bonus at higher dupes. It does not have enough stats to compete with 4-star weapons but is a reasonable option if it's all you have. The only downside is that the buff only lasts 10 seconds, meaning it may fall off in the hands of a Main DPS character who takes up more field time.
Best Echo Sets
Hybrid configuration

If you're playing Yangyang in the Hybrid role, here's what you should use on her:

1

2 Set: Energy Regen increases by 10%.

5 Set: Upon using Outro Skill, ATK of the next Resonator increases by 22.5% for 15s.

Support configuration

If you're playing Yangyang in the Support role, here's what you should use on her (also make sure to use the Originite: Type II weapon to allow her to easily trigger Healing and the set effect):

1

2 Set: Healing increases by 10%.

5 Set: Upon healing allies, increase ATK of the entire team by 15%, lasting 30s.

Best Main Echoes

Echoes in Wuthering Waves are an essential part of the character rotations, granting a large amount of Resonance Energy and damage but at the cost of high field time for the most powerful ones. But by using some Echoes right before you're about to switch out on the character, you're able to move to your next character while your previous one is still in the echo animation - it’s what we call an Echo Swap Cancel.

Echo Swap Cancel is almost always the optimal way to use Echoes, and will result in big reductions in character field time and large increases to DPS, but not all of the most powerful Echoes can be swap cancelled in this way. For example, the Feilian Beringal (Aero), Dreamless (Havoc), Tempest Mephis (Electro), Mourning Aix (Spectro), and Infernal Rider (Fusion) Echoes can all be Swap Cancelled.

The remaining element, so Glacio while having powerful Echoes has none powerful enough that can be swap cancelled, and to make things worse, no Echoes that generate sufficient Energy and damage for their field time investment.

The result of this is that you can expect Glacio characters to have higher field time and lower DPS in calculations than their other elemental counter parts until they receive better Echoes to use.

Set

Moonlit Clouds

Supportive Echo that can be run at the cost of a sizeable chunk of damage for the character who equips, trading personal gain for team benefits. Should always be used and immediately switch cancelled right before performing an Outro, leading to another DPS. When done so will grant the next character switching in 12% increased DMG% which when combined with the 5P Moonlit set which also grants 22.5% ATK% under the same conditions makes for a sizeable boost.

While the echo does lower the damage of whoever wears it, it grants a massive chunk of energy on use usually saving 1 or sometimes even 2 Energy Regen sub stats that may otherwise be needed by the wearer allowing for some damage to be recovered.

Best Endgame Stats (Level 90)

Important! CRIT DMG has base value of 150% and Energy Regen has a base value of 100% when you check them in game. The recommended values below don't include the base value but rather show how much on top of it you need to obtain.

  • HP: 14000+

  • DEF: 1000+

  • Energy Regen: 0%

    • Yangyang doesn't need any energy generation rate to have her ultimate available enough for most teams to make use of her concerto effect when they need it.

    • But if you're playing Yangyang in teams that want to use her ultimate on cooldown or want to dedicate less field time to her perhaps only using her skill and Forte aerial plunge building some energy regeneation rate can assist with both of these.

ROTATION INFO

When playing Yangyang as a support focus on achieving the following in combat:

  • Keep your Resonance Skill on cooldown at all times, unless its usage interrupts use of other higher priority cooldowns or DPS burst windows.
  • Always utilize Yangyang’s Ultimate as frequently as possible aside from saving it to Group-Up enemies at specific points of combat.
  • Use her Echo as frequently as possible asides from saving it for usage just before a burst combo when using Bell-Borne Echo, or alongside her Outro to buff one of your core DPS when using Impermanence Heron,
  • Utilize her Forte Gauge charges whenever filled to jump Aerial Plunge (not Heavy Aerial Plunge) to generate massive amounts of Concerto Energy. This can be Swap-Canceled to protect her during its long animation while saving field time.
  • Incase of spare field time or need to use her Concerto Gauge in a pinch, Yangyang can build additional Forte Gauge charges via Heavy Attacks or a full Basic Attack sequence to accelerate the process.
Synergies

yangyang is very flexible and can be used in any team really.

Example Teams

yangyang is very flexible and can be used in any team in the Support slot. Just make sure to equip the Originite: Type II Weapon and Rejuvenating Glow set on Yangyang for her to perform well in the Support slot.
