Review
Offers a wide range of utility in the form of debuffs and a shield.
Needs little field-time to do his job.
Low damage and overall stats due to scaling off of DEF.
Also because of that, he doesn’t synergize well with most buffers.
Adler is Support of the Incantation attribute who can sometimes act as a Sub-DPS. His best utility comes from his Passive, “Temperance”, which inflicts three random debuffs whenever Scorch is inflicted on a target. Consequently, Scorch teams are where he fits best. He does have a certain degree of versatility, functioning in DoT-based teams or even as a Shield support thanks to his skill, but his value is diminished in both instances if he’s brought into the team solely for that.
His role as a Sub-DPS isn’t recommended outside the early game for two simple reasons: firstly, his kit focuses on, and scales off of DEF instead of ATK, so he won’t synergize well with most buffers. Secondly, in order to make the most of his Sub-DPS potential, he requires a lot of on-field time spamming his Basic Attack in order to get stacks of Karma. Karma being the main status that boosts the damage of his skill.
All things considered, when bringing Adler to Scorch teams for utility purposes, his gameplay is rather simple. Switch him in and use his skill for the shield and to trigger the Esper Cycle, then switch him out. The same can be said of his ultimate, which deals slightly more damage than his skill, with the trade-off of not giving a shield to the party.
Things change a bit after getting his Awakenings and Resonances, however. And since Adler is an A-Class Hunter, that becomes a matter of time. The value and suggested priority order of each Awakening will be discussed in more detail below, but after unlocking A1, Adler’s effectiveness as a sub-DPS improves considerably (albeit still not reaching the level of an S-Class). Once that Awakening effect is unlocked, he instantly gains 20 stacks of Karma after casting his ult. This changes his rotation to: Switch in > Ult > Skill > Switch out. Furthermore, after A6, his second Resonance is unlocked, increasing all Incantation DMG by 10% whenever the team has Blessing (his shield). A fine buff to have especially since at this point his skill uptime will be quite high, with only 4 seconds of downtime.

Teams & Synergy
Scorch Team
Adler’s main role in this team is to wield “The Great Thief” Arc to buff everyone’s Break Intensity which increases the damage dealt by each break. He should also cast his shield as often as possible because it will also apply a DoT and increase Incantation DMG (at A6).
Hex Team
Adler provides shielding in this team and wants to use his Skill and Ultimate under Hex to maximize their damage. With 2 characters of each attribute it is possible to maintain Hex 100% of the time.
Awakening & Calculations
In NTE, you can freely choose Awakening Effects, so you are not forced to unlock them in a specific order, and you can unselect them at any time.
A1 = A6 > A3 > A5 > A4 > A2
Most of Adler’s Awakening bonuses improve his Shield, and are all important to compensate his low rarity. A1 is an interesting pick as it gives a substantial improvement to his rotation, but it can be skipped in favor of the shield-focused awakenings for players who don’t wish to use Adler to deal damage at all. It’s a bit of an odd-choice since you have to use his skill anyway to activate his shield, but I’m not judging.
A6 is the other best recommendation, as it increases the Shield duration from 8s to 12s, significantly improving the uptime. A3 is a flat increase for the shield, while A5 helps with Ultimate uptime. If you are using Adler on a more active role, it may be a good idea to prioritize A5 alongside with A1, but for most players, upgrades to the shield itself will bring more value. And speaking of that, A4 adds another layer of protection by absorbing 50% of the damage overflow when the shield breaks. Finally, A2 brings a flat increase of damage to Adler’s skill. It isn’t all that impressive compared to most characters out there, but certainly will make any hypothetical Adler DPS main happy.
His first Resonance is the standard increase in ability level, while the second Resonance is actually one of the high points of Adler’s kit, with the 10% Incantation DMG buff while the shield is up.

This Arc gives Adler a bit more personal survivability, while also strengthening his shields. This is overall the best option when leaning into his sustain capabilities.
