Callan is an A-rank Graveborn Tank who serves as a meat shield that protects the team at the start of battle, and offers some Crowd Control (CC).

At the start of battle, Callan becomes unaffected and gains a shield, protecting allies in a 2 tile radius from damage for the first couple seconds by redirecting half of their damage to himself.

His first skill deals some damage and a Knock Down, and his second skill retaliates with a portion of his absorbed damage, which in theory sounds great, but from testing, his retaliation attack is a lot weaker than Thoran’s counter.

Once per battle, Callan can also do a map-wide stun attack at Mythic+..

Now, for a quick overview of his performance in the various game modes:

  • Story and AFK stages – Callan can be used in Smokey teams or Hugin turtle teams, but lacks the utility of meta picks and is pretty much just a meat shield in this scenario.

  • Dream Realm – As a Tank with low damage output and no offensive buffs, Callan has no use in current Dream Realm bosses, where every unit should either buff or deal damage.

  • PVP – Callan has a place in PvP as a counter against high burst teams, if you don’t want to bring Lily May, but after the initial couple seconds he dies very quickly, especially for a character with little to no utility, who is meant to be a meat shield. His second ultimate hardly ever gets any use due to its slow charging. One way to get good use out of Callan is to invest into Paragon dupes to compensate, as he will not last long as a tank at Supreme+ against Paragon heroes.

  • Battle Drills – Callan is not a good option for Battle Drills due to his low damage overall, and almost any other option brings more offensive utility for the tank slot here.

Callan is surprisingly tanky at Epic rarity, being able to survive against an initial Eironn burst, but he dies shortly after, much like Brutus but without the Taunt or Invulnerability.

  • Legendary+ Increases his Vitality.

  • Mythic+ gives him a map-wide CC ability that can be used once per battle.

  • EX+10 greatly increases CC duration for that skill.

  • Supreme+ gives him some self heal when he gains a shield.

He wants all the dupes he can get, up to paragons in PvP, and Supreme+ in AFK stages, due to how squishy he is, for a Tank.

Conclusion

Callan is a niche Tank, best used against burst damage teams. Get him to Epic rarity for these situations, upgrade him to Supreme+ if you use Hugin teams for AFK pushing, or upgrade him to Paragon tier if you intend to use him in PvP, otherwise, he can be safely skipped.

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Can protect the team against burst damage at the start of battle.

  • Works fine at low dupes.

  • Does not require high EX weapon investment.

  • Makes himself unaffected.

Cons

  • No Taunt.

  • Low Damage.

  • Just a meat shield, little to no utility, but not even that good at being a meat shield.

  • Squishy after his initial Restless Guardian cast, and slow to charge to cast it again later.

Guides

EX Investment

Since the

Temporal Essence
Temporal Essence
and
Twilight Essence
Twilight Essence
are very hard to obtain, you have to be really careful with the using them to upgrade the EX weapon. And in this guide we ordered all characters by the priority when it comes to how much they need investment in their EX weapon to work well and where should you stop to get the best bang for your buck.

Why does the +8 breakpoint appear so often?

Because the raw stats you get from upgrading the EX weapon help you more than the passive in some cases. Also, to upgrade the EX from +5 to +8 you need only 30x

Temporal Essence
Temporal Essence
, while the remaining two levels require additional 45x
Temporal Essence
Temporal Essence
. So you get the best bang for your buck stopping at +8.

Color explanation:

  • +0 - the base investment for the character,
  • +5/8 - the next step that you should do when investing into that character,
  • +10/15 - the final step you should do when investing into that character - you can go beyond that later though once you have the Essences to spare.
