Matilda is a 5✦ rarity character from the Star afflatus who deals Mental damage and belongs to the Sub DPS class.

A Crit-based damage dealer, Matilda does pretty well in single-target scenarios and can apply Confusion. However, she suffers from lack of Portrays because she isn't available through gacha.

Review

Matilda is a crit-oriented character, but her kit doesn’t work much in her favor. She needs to be constantly on a buffed state and have her skill “Ingenious Étude” on level 2 or above to use as an opener in order to make the best use of her potential.

Matilda can be a decent enough Damage Dealer in the early game, but the farther in the game, the more her kit plays against her. Her passives don’t really add anything noticeable, her multipliers are on the lower side, she needs too much set up, and a team built around her to do anything at all. On top of that, her critical technique is below most other critical oriented characters, making it harder for her to get consistent on her critical hits.

Most of these weaknesses could be attenuated if she had access to her Portrays. If you still wish to use her despite all this, she can still fill a sub-DPS and support-ish role by applying Confusion with an innovative Étude. Or you can experiment using her alongside buffers, as Matilda can already fill the role of applying the Confusion debuff herself.

Ultimate can be powerful if it lands a critical hit.

Currently, there's no way to upgrade her Portray; (Gets one free by logging in during patch 1.9)
Below average base critical technique for a crit-oriented character;
Can be difficult to set up in order to deal damage, being below average most of the time.

Prioritizes Critical Rate and Critical DMG. Genuinity provides more consistent critical hits with a side of Incantation Might. With a Critical Rate & DMG Bonus buffer on the team, you can consider Aspirational (Critical DMG/ATK) instead. If you’re using other Inspiration characters, make sure to unlock the same Resonance Pattern on every character because the Impromptu Incantation takes an average of all teammates’ stats.

Impromptu Matilda makes great use of Belt It Out by buffing the whole Impromptu team with 4% DMG Bonus per Star character, up to 16%. Since Impromptu Incantation takes an average of everyone's stats, this DMG Bonus translates directly into Impromptu damage.

If you're running a budget Impromptu team without Barcarola, make sure someone on the team is running Addio Coda for a free team-wide 6–12% DMG Bonus and more Impromptu attacks per turn.

Hopscotch is actually pretty good as a generic 18% Incantation Might psychube for normal Matilda and Impromptu Matilda. It also has her face on it! Just note that 16–32% Ultimate Might only benefits her own damage output. You can buy unlimited copies of Hopscotch from the Fragment Shop, so this option also saves you Gluttony.

Matilda's crit-based kit makes good use of the Crit Rate from For Rehabilitation, and her single-target Skill 1 can stack up DMG bonus.

Thunderous Applause is a good general option for any crit-based character; both Matilda's Ultimate and Skill 1 can benefit from its Crit DMG buff. It's also available in the Fragment Shop like Hopscotch so you don't need Gluttony to max amplify it.
