Review
Naielle Bluesteel is a melee-range damage dealer/ frontline tank hybrid. Naielle differs from her peers in that she is noticeably more effective within her niche as a “bruiser”, made possible via her high uptime invulnerability. Counterintuitively, for a damage dealer, Naielle has anti-synergy with ASPD. After every special, Naielle becomes invulnerable for the duration of 2 basic attack animations; as ASPD reduces animation time, it actually reduces Naielle’s invulnerability uptime.
Naielle’s Alternium Reactor improves her survivability by adding a flat Special skill CD reduction on her enhanced basic and increasing its frequency, which in effect increases uptime on her invulnerability self-buff. Naielle’s alternium reactor offsets some of her aforementioned ASPD anti-synergy and in doing so, noticeably improves her performance.
In PVE, frontline tanks with buffs/ debuffs are valued more highly than those focused solely on tanking for themselves. Naielle’s personal damage output, while above average for a frontline tank, still pales in comparison to that of dedicated damage dealers. Naielle meets the baseline requirements expected of her as a frontline tank, but she contributes nothing more to the team.
In PVP, Naielle sees fringe play as a frontline tank in specialized comps. She is typically paired with Albion for the stealth on S1, which improves her survivability and manipulates positioning to allow her to wreak havoc in the enemy backline.
Importantly, Naielle’s heavy reliance on her invulnerability self-buff, the key aspect of her kit, is also her great weakness:
As a buff, Naielle’s invulnerability is highly susceptible to buff block (e.g. Awakened Yuna, Anila).
The gaps in Naielle’s invulnerability uptime can be exploited to burst her down while she is vulnerable (i.e. timed sniper deploys).
Pros & Cons
Pros
- High uptime invulnerability with a damage-oriented kit allows Naielle to apply more pressure than the average frontline unit.
- 6s skill seal on Special skill is nice-to-have, relevant utility on a frequently cast skill.
Cons
- As a damage dealer/ frontline tank hybrid, Naielle is cursed with the gearing issues that plague the rest of the niche; building damage comes at the sacrifice of survivability, and as a relatively squishy unit Naielle cannot afford to lose any tank stats.
