Onyx Overview

Onyx, the CEO of Bestie Production, is the thirteenth Beast Soul released in the game. She is the latest addition to the roster of INT Supporters, arriving with a complex kit that promises to boost her allies in numerous ways. Let's take a look at her skills first:

  • Ultimate - Stars, Cosmos and Octo: This AoE buff significantly boosts all allies' Physical and Magical Resistance by 30% for 24 seconds. When her Passive, Cosmos in Concord, is active, Onyx also increases Type Damage by 30% and adds a Heal over Time effect based on 2% of her attack for the entire duration.

  • Main - Magnificent Voice: A hybrid ability that deals damage equal to 150% of Onyx's Attack to all enemies while healing her allies for 300% of her Attack. This skill offers a Stun-on-Demand and can Cleanse when Cosmos in Concord is active. It’s a powerful skill combining CC and maintaining the health of your team simultaneously.

  • Sub 1 - Cosmic Music: This Sub Skill deals damage in a small radius and inflicts Shock on enemies. Additionally it buffs Bestie Production units, that is, Mica, Seeha, Naomi, and Erusha. Each of these characters deal additional damage on certain skills or normal attacks with her buffs.

  • Sub 2 - Star Spectating: This skill heals allies, deals damage to the nearest enemy, and provides buffs to the whole team based on the soul's attribute; if the attribute is DEX, it increases Crit Rate by 20%, INT provides a 10% Mana Recovery boost, and STR reduces Damage Received by 15%. However, when Cosmos in Concord is active, all of these benefits are applied.

  • Passive - Cosmos in Concord: Heart of Onyx’s kit, providing a strong increase to all allies' Attack and Max HP by 30%, provided there are no Angel, Chaotic, or Demon souls on the team. This skill is essential for unlocking the additional effects of her other skills, making it an utmost priority to fulfill its condition!

  • Artifact – Golden Record: Onyx’s artifact further amplifies her team's Offense. When Cosmos in Concord is active, it increases allies' damage by 10-25% and provides an additional 10-15% damage against Angel, Chaotic, and Demon souls. Upon reaching Legendary+ ascension, her Ultimate also grants a 15% increase in damage against these specific soul types for 24 seconds.

Onyx's abilities include healing, Attack and HP increases, Damage Reduction, Damage Amplification, Mana Recovery, Shock DoT debuffs, and the rare but strong Type Damage increase buff, among other utilities. However this impressive display is put to a stop by her Passive, Cosmos in Concord, which restricts her team composition by excluding Angel, Chaotic, and Demon souls.

This limitation presents a strong challenge in the current meta where Angel, Demon, and Chaotic souls are core of most successful teams in both Battlefield and Raid scenarios, but it does provides some opportunities for team building without these units, freeing them up for other teams. Onyx faces the hard task of reinventing the wheel to carve out a niche for herself, facing off against Yuria, the defacto choice of support. On the flip side, this can also be seen as being an alternative to Yuria, albeit a potentially lesser one as she does lack the important Speed buffs, but does bring Mana Recovery in its place.

To further complicate team building around her, Onyx's needs to use her Ultimate skill to activate the Type Damage buff, which reduces its impact on teammates whose DPS relies heavily on their Ultimates. Though, this buff does last a huge 24 seconds, allowing you to use her Ultimate every second rotation and still benefit from the buff being up for the majority of the fight. Despite these issues, there is a specific future content where Onyx is meant to shine: the upcoming fifth Guild Raid—Pluto—which is expected to revolve around Angel, Demon, and Chaotic elements. Here, Onyx’s strengths could potentially be unrivalled. Outside of that, Onyx finds a place in Rudra Guild Raid comfortably owing to her Stun on Demand along with plethora of Survival and Damage Buffs, essentially fulfilling all the checklist for Rudra.

Investment

Onyx is relatively accessible in terms of investment, being a support unit. Here’s how different types of players might approach her:

  • Cultured Users: If you're a fan of tentacles, or maybe Cthulhu references, she's fun to have around. Also appealing to anyone who has an affinity for the cosmic aesthetic perhaps or Hololive enjoyers seeking a budget version of Ninomae Ina'Nis.

  • New Players: Onyx can be a great addition to a Beast team, making her a strong unit in Beast Gate and Battlefield, especially when paired with Mica and Seeha. One copy is recommended.

  • F2P/Casual Players: Depending on your account’s progress, Onyx might be skippable as she doesn’t bring anything new to the table compared to existing units. If you do decide to invest, a single copy should suffice.

  • Dolphins/Competitive Raid Players: While Onyx might need to work her way into existing Raid compositions, her potential dominance in the Rudra & Pluto Guild Raid, as well as in Ayame, Adrianne, and the upcoming Lizelotte ESS, make her a worthwhile investment. Aiming for four copies to ascend her to Eternal+ is advisable for competitive players.

  • Whales/Rankers: Onyx’s expected superiority in the Rudra & Pluto Guild Raid is reason enough to invest heavily in her. Achieving Origin Ascension with a Origin Artifact should be the goal to maximize her potential.

  • Overall: Artifact investment is huge for Onyx. Even with few copies of Onyx herself, her Artifact at Legendary+ or higher is a must. Bringing a whopping 25% damage dealt increase at Origin, having her simply exist on the battlefield hugely impacts her team's DPS potential.

Team Composition and Synergies

As a support unit, Onyx pairs best with high damage DPS units that can fully use her buffs. Given the exclusion of Angel, Chaotic, and Demon souls from her team, she works well alongside Mica and Seeha, significantly boosting their damage output with her buffs and Sub Skill 1 unique benefits. In Raids, she is likely to find a place in teams centered around Violette or Tasha, allowing you to funnel your best A/D/C in other two compositions for maximum damage gain, although thorough testing will be required to determine her optimal team compositions.

Conclusion

Onyx is a support character with an overloaded kit that appears impressive on paper but comes with challenging execution due to her restrictive team-building requirements and reliance on her Ultimate to deliver her most crucial Type Damage buff. As such, her ratings are relatively low placeholders subject to change as various Guild Raids go live. Now that we have a Yuria alternative, she can most likely aid in building secondary faction-focused teams for raids that were previously limited due to lack of characters with Faction type damage boost.

Despite potential limitations, Onyx’s future looks great, especially with the Pluto Guild Raid coming soon, where she is expected to perform exceptionally well. Her relevance in at least three ESS Raids further enhances her long-term value for players who are focused on competitive play. But, with Chaotic Linzy’s release imminent and the possibility of a collaboration event shortly thereafter, players face a (not-so) tough decision regarding their investment. Thankfully, Onyx relies more on her Artifact than Ascensions for her potential, so for most, securing one or two copies of Onyx and then saving resources for Chaotic Linzy is a generally an easy choice.
