Catherine is a human soul that mainly relies on damage mitigation through shields rather than providing large amounts of healing compared to other supports. Despite her heals being relatively low, her shields coupled with her increase in resistences can make the difference between victory or defeat. She also boasts an AoE invulnerability to herself and nearby party members on her subskill Sanctus, which is amazingly helpful if the timing lines up with big enemy damage. While her strengths are a godsend (pun intended) early on, her usefulness starts to diminish later in the game. It's undeniable that she's a welcome addition to teams that need her extra defensive power, the power difference between your team and the enemy becomes too great later on. The best tactic is often to hit hard and fast, since survival isn't always an option. Higher sync levels and instakill tactics have brought Cath down from her place at the top. That isn't to say she doesn't still have a place in teams. She pairs well with tanks like Chloe, where Catherine's extra resistence can help Chloe survive enough to proc her own passive regen to survive in the early stages of a fight, giving your DPS enough time to get their main skills ready. Her artifact helps boost her heals, but it's a bit unreliable as it's on her subskill. She also relies heavily on good positioning, as her skill range is rather short and won't reach many of your teammates. This includes all ranged units, and even the human tank Claire, who often dashes well out of range of Cath's skills right at the start of a fight. Her usefulness in raids has also largely become a thing of the past, as better shielders have been introduced that either offer more DPS, offensively oriented buffs, or debuffs that apply to raid mechanics. The addition of content where the enemy souls are able to use their ultimates has brought about some niche use for her, since her ultimate can potentially let you tank an otherwise devastating hit from the enemy team. She is also still very good in PvP, where her defensive capabilities can be the difference between victory or defeat.
Shielding on demand
Teamwide defense buff
Invuln for frontliners
Limited healing
Relies on good positioning
Subskills can be hard to time
